Road Scott

This is a Scott fitted with Triumph suspension.
Currently fitted with a detachable 550cc head.
Sat Oct21 2006 - Earlier this year I tried to get it running for a MOT. It started with difficulty, but misfired when revved. I suspect that I may not have got the timing right. It has a coil/points system, with 2 coils and 2 points mounted on the right end of the crank. Today I checked the primary resistance : 3 Ohms on the right(red) coil and 4 ohms on the other. Looks high compared to modern coils but may be OK. Resistance from the secondary to the primary was 5K on the right and 7K on the left. Again this looks low, but may be ok.

I noticed that I had put in BR6ES plugs when it had previously had B4ES, those 6's were the lowest number I could get. However the R means they have a built in resistor which would make the spark weaker.

I'm also supsicious as to how I set up the timing last time. I was going to start with 0 before TDC on full advance, but with the engine not running, the weights are in and it is fully retarded, so I may have forgotten that and set it up to 0 degress on full retard. That would have made it harder to start and may have put on too much advance as the revs came up.

After playing around with swapping coils, condensers, and points, I think I have 2 faulty condensers. One gives a spark, but also sparks at the points. The other gives no spark at all. Unfortunately they are quite an old type with a nut and a thread coming out the end, rather than just a wire and they appear to be difficult to find. I'am currently trying with Collectors Car Parts in Sipson, near Heathrow.
